What is it?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest recorded forms of medical treatment known, having been used in China for over 3000 years. Needles are inserted into specific areas of the body known as acupuncture points. The needles are extremely fine and do not have a cutting edge, consequently it is extremely rare for bleeding to occur. When the needles are inserted, most people describe the sensation as a numbness, tingling, or mild discomfort or ache.

How does it work?

There are many theories – the traditional Chinese view is that Qi (energy) flows freely when the body is in a healthy state. If there is a problem, energy stagnates. The stimulation of appropriate acupuncture points frees this stagnation. The modern, scientific view is that acupuncture stimulates the brain to produce natural pain-relieving chemicals called endorphins. These assist the body to heal itself and gain pain relief. There is increasing scientific evidence to support this view.

What conditions is it used for?

Our therapists are in a unique position of being able to combine acupuncture with other treatment methods such as exercise, manipulation and massage. Acupuncture is effective for any conditions requiring pain relief such as back and neck pain, or any in situations where the body needs help with healing, for example a ligament sprain or a torn muscle.
